We noticed a few samples of photographic work as turned out of George W. Scott's gallery by his new operator, Charles L. Kersting. These samples, which are on exhibition in Mr. Gillette's window, are recommendations of themselves, and we hardly feel able to add to what is placed there for public inspection. Mr. Scott has been fortunate in securing such an operator as Mr. Kersting, and those who want photographs gotten up in the highest style should pay them a call.

"We would acknowledge the receipt from Mr. J. C. H. Grabill, of Deadwood, South Dakota, of a large and superb collection of views, which are the most thoroughly representative of Western frontier life of any we have seen. Among them are many of the late Indian outbreak, as well as portraits of a number of the participators therein; and we also notice several fine views of the celebrated Devil's Tower, noted in a recent issue of the Bulletin. We believe that Mr. Grabill and Mr. Meddaugh are the only two persons who have photographed this remarkable column." Anthony's photographic bulletin, E. & H. T. Anthony & co., 1891.

Wentworth house has a new office desk, with 34 beautifully designed business cards arranged on each side of a heavy French plate mirror 3x5 feet in dimension, one of the finest pieces of ornamental furniture ever put in position in this or any other country. Colonel Cornell is justly proud of it, and the last thing before going to breakfast after it had been placed in position was to stand before it and admire the symmetrical proportions of the shadow. While at breakfast some fiend incarnate threw a stone that struck the mirror about the center and shattered it in a thousand directions, the breaks, running in every direction from the common center, that had received the blow. When the Colonel returned from breakfast and saw what was done he was hot, not to a point that would cause him to weep but just enough to induce him to offer $10, to a man who could swear, and do the subject justice and to offer $50 reward for evidence that would convict the perpetrator of the outrage. Quite a crowd had collected among whom was Herancourt the artist, who is now getting up a birds eye view of Deadwood, who to prevent a scene stepped to the front with a rag, and wiped the soap marks he had made on the glass away, and John set em up to everybody.

Proof sheet of Herancourt's bird's eye view of Rapid City, now on exhibition at the probate judge's office, is a fine specimen of art, and is a credit to the artist. As an ornament to a parlor wall, even in a country that never heard of the Hills or Rapid, it would attract attention. It is worth going to see.

This office will issue, about February 25th, and Extra Edition of the Times. It will contain a history of the Black Hills from its opening up to the present time, not in detail as to each and every particular event, but upon all matters of public import quite full accounts will be given. It was the intention of the publisher to print a twelve, sixteen or twenty page issue, but shall be governed by the amount of interesting matter obtained, and will give all it is worth, whether it is eight or more pages. Shall also print in this issue the picture of Deadwood, drawn for us by Mr. Herancourt. This office having the only complete records of events of the Hills during the past nearly eight years, which is the complete files of the Times, are in possession of data unobtainable from any other source, and from which we shall compile much of our issue, and hence will be accurate. The different industries of the country, agricultural, mining and stock will receive due attention; and, we believe, this issue of the Times will meet a long felt need, that of a volume containing full information relative to the entire Hills country, and if so, will be much sought after by persons abroad, who are desirous to obtain knowledge of the country and its resources. We have not yet determined upon the number of papers we shall print, but orders are coming in rapidly, and we shall soon know of this later. Our advertising space is nearly all taken, it being the intention to put but two columns of advertising matter upon each page, the remaining five columns of each page being purely historical matter. In conclusion, the Times Extra will be the best paper we can get up, and one which we will not ourselves be ashamed to send to any country in the world. The orders will now justify printing 5,000, and from appearances will be compel

1889 The Cultivator & country gentleman, Volume 54

"After several attempts to hold an election at Guthrie, Oklahoma, by counting and forming in line, a council of seven elected D. P. Dyer of Kansas City as mayor, who proceeded to run the gamblers out. The laying out of streets is interfering with claims. Surveyors and lawyers are making money. Fifty buildings have been put up. W. V. Herancourt, artist for Harper's Weekly, fell dead before his tent April 27. Since the 27th, 800 wagons, with 3,200 persons went north through Cherokee strip, where soldiers are on guard. Not much farming yet done."
